The brief

The brief was to construct a three-storey student accommodation facility.

The challenges

Thurston worked to a tight budget and a fast deadline. The building required a BREEAM rating (a globally recognised benchmark used to assess the sustainability credentials of a building) of “Very Good”.

The solution

With tight deadlines and a need to minimise impact on the day-to-day running of the campus, modern methods of construction were chosen for the project. Working with the Estates Management team, the project was delivered on time and on budget, with regular communication meetings held to assess progress.

To ensure the BREEAM rating was achieved, Thurston worked with a professional specialist consultant, coordinating with the university, mechanical and electrical sub-contractors, and supply chain partners to provide all the required documentation.

Mike Tipping, Improvement Officer on the Estates Management Team at Aberystwyth University, said:

“The building was finished to a high standard, particularly the interior. And the bedrooms are some of the best a
higher/further education establishment
in the UK has to offer. The communal areas are a wonderful place for students to socialise too. The project was delivered on time and to a tight budget. We now have fee-paying postgraduates from the UK and overseas living in the accommodation for 50 weeks of the year. Both the university and students are delighted with the building and the facilities that it contains.”
